"The issue is how do you value it," he says. "You're probably looking at $4,500 to $6,000 in costs of living [per year] and over four years that's $20,000 more that will be financed."

The TD study found a fouryear degree earned while living at home cost $52,000 a savings of $25,000 over the living away costs and will rise to $101,000 by 2027.

But what about the expense side? It's not to suggest that students live extravagantly. Most don't. But one way to control your debt is not to take more on that you have to.

"Students often want to go away for university but it's an expensive proposition," said Craig Alexander, chief economist with TD.

between $1,001 and $5,000 this summer while about 26% will earn between $5,000 and $10,000.

He suggests the best strategy might be for students to take on the debt because they have more earning potential ahead with the proviso they are cautious with that debt.

$25,000 or so in savings might mean to you in the long term. Invested at a paltry 3%, and compounded, it would mean an extra $82,000 when you retire.

But for many students, the bigger expense is the cost of housing. Living at home while attending university may not be something everybody wants to consider but the savings are big.

Better yet, think of what the debt will mean to your lifestyle for your post graduate years. Even with prime at 3%, students pay 250 basis points above that, so that extra $25,000 bill upon graduation would mean a monthly payment of $271.32 based on 15 year amortization. It also means you paid more than $7,500 in interest by the time it is paid off, based on a 15 year schedule.

"Some universities are known to be particularly strong for their programs in certain fields," says Mr. Alexander. "You may be more attractive to employers because employers may be more attracted to certain schools."

"Given the cost of post secondary education, as well as other expenses students have, they will need to watch their spending carefully," said Christina Kramer, an executive vice president with CIBC, in a release.

Of course there are also good reasons to leave home to study.

"If you live in Toronto, it's probably not critical to go out of town. If you live in Timbuktu, it is certainly critical. Even if you live in Toronto, it might be critical to go out of town to enter an especially appropriate program for you," says Saul Schwartz, a Carleton University professor who has studied student debt issues.

A study from Statistics Canada, albeit an old one from a decade ago, looked at whether families living near universities had a major cost savings advantage. "Distance appears to play a much bigger role for students in families in lower income brackets," the StatsCan study found, showing those kids were more likely to pursue a degree if they had a university nearby.
