"I started off the year getting alright grades, and the homework load was pretty heavy," Prindiville said. "It's an advanced level class, so it's a little bit more work, and now I get most of my work done in class. I go home and watch a few videos, and I'm pretty much done for the night."

In the classroom, students can work independently and in groups. They work on labs and take tests when they feel ready. Connell said it's a concept she read about in a journal. It's big in the Midwest and catching on in the East.

"For me, it means my kids are accessing me for the things they couldn't access me for before, because I would only deliver the material for them and they would have to go home and apply it, and I was nowhere to be found," Connell said. "Now, they get the delivery at home, and I'm here in the class, helping them apply it."

Connell checks in with each student, sees what videos they watch and sees what they plan to do to meet the goals of the lesson.

After starting her year in the traditional stand and teach way, Connell asked administrators at John Stark if she could try flipping the classroom, and they gave it their blessing. With the help of her smart board, laptops students can sign out and the growing popularity of smartphones, the class is off and running.

"I feel like it incorporates all the things we are facing as teachers, with students with different levels of learning fast, slow and everything in between and I would just teach to the middle, and the one at the lower end would be lost, and the one at the upper end would be bored," she said.
